Understanding Your CHAMPVA Coverage
CHAMPVA is one of the most underused federal health benefits — often because families don't know they qualify, or don't know how to use it. Here's what it covers and how to get the most from it.
Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs
What CHAMPVA Covers — and Who Qualifies
CHAMPVA provides healthcare coverage for spouses, dependents, and survivors of certain veterans — working like civilian insurance for most medically necessary services including doctor visits, hospital care, mental health treatment, prescriptions, and preventive care. It is administered by the VA Health Administration Center (HAC) in Denver and is completely separate from TRICARE.
Who qualifies for CHAMPVA
- Spouse or child of a veteran rated 100% permanently and totally (P&T) disabled due to a service-connected condition
- Spouse or child of a veteran who died from a service-connected disability
- Spouse or child of a veteran who was rated 100% P&T at time of death
- Spouse or child of a service member who died in the line of duty (not in a combat zone)
VA Benefits & Claims
Disability Claims & the P&T Rating
CHAMPVA eligibility for dependents flows directly from the veteran's VA rating. If the veteran hasn't filed — or hasn't reached 100% P&T — that's where to start.
Mental Health Support
Crisis Lines & Mental Health Care
CHAMPVA covers mental health treatment. These organizations go further — providing free, immediate, and specialized care for veterans and their families.
Healthcare
Additional Healthcare Resources
Beyond CHAMPVA — VA enrollment for the veteran, caregiver support, and organizations for critically injured families.

For Those Who Lost a Veteran
